Chapter 6
Buck sat at a table in the back of the saloon with two women.
The piano player who seemed to be in charge of whatever was going on.
And the woman who looked like Kitty, but wasnât Kitty. She was prettier than Kitty actually, in an imperceptible way.
Zoe. Her name was Zoe.
He held his glass of whiskey, swirling the amber liquid, but not drinking.
He needed all his wits about him for the information that the girl Macy was trying to explain.
âWait here,â Macy said, glancing down to what looked like a manâs watch she wore on her left wrist. A watch with numbers on it. âIâll be right back.â
Buck pulled his chair closer to Zoe.
âWhat do you make of all this?â he asked, scrubbing a hand over his chin. Heâd shaved that morning, but already he was scruffy.
Zoe blew a stray lock of hair out of her eyes.
If she were Kitty, Buck would say that she was tired.
But this girl, Zoe, he wasnât so sure. This girl had a hesitant smile.
She was disarming and she didnât even know it.
âI think,â she said, raising her eyes, framed with dark thick lashes, to his. âI think that somehow Iâm from the future.â
She stopped. Took a sip of her drink, made a face, and pushed it away.
âAnd another version of myself is still there. But this version of me is supposed to be here.â
Buck shook his head.
âSounds like nonsense if I ever heard any,â he said. Though even as he said the words, a chill ran down his spine.
Zoe raised an eyebrow.
âYou donât believe her⦠the girl⦠Eliza.â
Buck leaned back in his chair. Ran a hand through his hair.
He didnât know what he believed right now.
All he knew was that there was a young lady sitting here with him who looked like a spitting image of Kitty.
Only she was more agreeable than Kitty.
In fact, now that heâd spent a few minutes with Zoe, he was so certain that she wasnât Kitty that he didnât want to tell her about Kitty. Or tell Eliza either.
Maybe especially Eliza. Eliza was scary.
It wasnât that she was a woman in charge. He had no problem with that. It was that she talked about things that couldnât be.
And she talked about them in such a matter-of-fact way that Buck had little doubt that she was telling the truth. At least the truth as she knew it.
And he was pretty sure that no one could make this stuff up.
Eliza was actually from the future, too. Thisâthe pastâwas just her job.
In the future, they had a way of tracking things that they didnât have here in what she called the past.
So Elizaâs job was to come here to make sure everything went smoothly.
Her words. So everything went smoothly.
Apparently, according to her, certain people were supposed to be in more than one timeline.
Buck couldnât begin to understand more than the fundamentals of what she was saying.
But there one the thing she said that was more troubling than anything else.
She said there had been some kind of mix-up between Zoe and Kitty.
